The Fingernail Test — Can your scratch be polished out?

Run your fingernail across the damaged area, perpendicular to the scratch. What you feel tells us whether polishing alone will fix it.

Nail Glides Over — No Catch

You can see the mark but your fingernail glides smoothly over it. This is a clear-coat scratch — polishing removes it almost every time. Expect 95-100% improvement.

~

Nail Lightly Catches

The fingernail catches slightly but doesn't drop into the scratch. Paint-layer damage. We can typically improve this 70-90% through wet sanding and multi-step polish, often with a small touch-up.

Nail Drops Into the Scratch

Your nail catches firmly or drops into the groove. The scratch has cut through paint to primer or metal. Polishing alone won't fully fix this — you'll need our auto body and repaint service.

What Paint Correction Can & Can't Fix

We work on the clear coat — the transparent top layer over your paint. Setting honest expectations matters.

✓ What Polishing Removes

  • Swirl marks and spider-web scratches from automatic car washes
  • Light scratches that don't catch a fingernail
  • Holograms and buffer trails from previous bad polish jobs
  • Water spots and mineral etching (early-stage)
  • Oxidation and dull, hazy paint
  • Light scuffs from brushes, branches, or improper washing
  • Bird-dropping etching (caught early)
  • Light clear-coat marring

✗ What Polishing Can't Fully Fix

  • Deep scratches that catch your fingernail strongly
  • Scratches that show primer (white/grey) or bare metal
  • Cracks or chips through the paint
  • Dents (we don't dent-pull — see PDR)
  • Severely peeling or failing clear coat
  • Rust damage

If your damage falls in this category, our auto body and paint shop handles repaints and panel work.

How Our Paint Correction Service Works

A typical multi-stage polish takes a full day. Single-panel jobs are usually done same-day.

1

Inspection & Plan

We measure clear-coat thickness, inspect the damage type, and recommend the lightest polishing combination that will get the result. We don't cut more clear coat than necessary.

2

Prep, Decontaminate & Polish

Wash, iron decontamination, clay-bar if needed, then the right combination — from a light fine polish to wet sanding (2000/2500/3000/5000 grit) followed by cut + medium + fine polish for heavier correction.

3

Refine, Protect & Inspect

Final fine polish to remove any haze, then a sealant or wax for protection (or upgrade to a ceramic coating for multi-year defense). We inspect under proper lighting before handover.

Polishing & Paint Correction Pricing

Most jobs are quoted after a quick inspection because the right approach depends on what we see in the paint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Single-panel polish is usually 1-2 hours. A multi-stage full-vehicle correction is a full day. The premium multi-step polish + ceramic coating is a 3-day service.

Modern paint correction removes a microscopic layer of clear coat — measured in microns. Done correctly with the right pad/compound combination, your paint can be safely polished multiple times in its lifetime. We use the lightest combination that gets the result, exactly so we don't remove more clear coat than necessary.

If the fingernail test shows the scratch is into the paint or primer, polishing alone won't fully remove it. We can usually improve it 70-90% with wet sanding and touch-up. For full restoration, our auto body shop handles repaints.

Yes — on our scratch repair service we offer a $50 touch-up add-on applied to the polished surface where deeper damage remains. On the full polish + ceramic coating package, complimentary touch-ups are included.

Polishing removes existing damage and restores the gloss already in your paint. Ceramic coating protects that finish from future damage. They're complementary — serious results come from doing both. Our $1,499.99 multi-step polish + ceramic coating service includes both.

Most cars with 1+ year of regular use benefit from at least a fine polish. Heavier correction (wet sanding + cut polish) makes sense when there are visible swirls/scratches that don't pass the fingernail test. Book a free in-person inspection and we'll show you under proper lighting exactly what's in your paint.
