Car Scratch Repair Calgary — Paintless & Touch-Up Service
Most car scratches don't need expensive bodywork. Using polishing, wet sanding, and optional touch-up, we remove or significantly reduce clear-coat and shallow paint scratches from $149.99/panel. Faster, cheaper, and your factory paint stays intact.
Use the fingernail test below to figure out what kind of scratch you're dealing with — it tells you whether we can fix it without paint.
The Fingernail Test — What kind of scratch do you have?
Drag your fingernail across the scratch, perpendicular to it. What you feel tells us almost everything we need to know.
Clear Coat Scratch (Light)
Nail glides over. You can see the scratch but can't feel it. The damage is only in the transparent clear coat. Polishing alone removes it almost completely.
Repair result: 95-100%
Method: Polish + buffing only
Paint Layer Scratch (Moderate)
Nail catches slightly. Scratch has cut through the clear coat into the paint layer. You may see white or a different color in the scratch. Often from keys or car wash brushes.
Repair result: 70-90%
Method: Wet sand + polish, optional touch-up
Deep Scratch (Severe)
Nail drops in. Scratch has cut through paint to primer (grey/white) or bare metal. Polishing alone won't fully fix this.
Repair result: Variable
Method: Body shop work + repaint (see auto body shop)
Let's Determine the Type of Car Scratch You Might Have
Three scratch types, three different repair approaches. Compare what you're seeing on your vehicle to the examples below.
Clear Coat Scratches & Scuffs
The clear coat is the transparent protective layer on top of your car's paint. Light scratches that only cut into the clear coat are the most common type and the easiest to repair. If you can see a mark but cannot feel it with your fingernail, it's likely in the clear coat only.
These scratches typically come from brush contacts, light scuffs from tree branches, automatic car washes, or improper hand washing technique.
Repair method: Professional polishing compounds applied with a high-speed buffer or dual-action polisher gently buff out clear-coat scratches. By carefully removing a microscopic layer of clear coat around the scratch, we level the area and make the scratch invisible without affecting the underlying color. After polishing, we reapply wax or paint sealant to restore gloss and protection.
Paint Layer Scratches
If a scratch cuts through the clear coat and exposes the colored base coat (the actual paint layer), it's a bit more serious. You can usually feel these scratches with your fingernail, and they might appear white or a different color because the underlying paint or primer is showing.
These often occur from keys, deeper scrapes against abrasive objects, parking-lot contact, or automatic car wash brushes that have collected grit.
Repair method: For medium-depth scratches, our technicians typically wet sand and polish the area using ultra-fine grit (2000 → 2500 → 3000 → 5000) to smooth the rough edges of the scratch. With our optional $50 touch-up add-on, we apply color-matched paint into the scratch groove to fill in missing color, let it dry, then carefully wet sand and polish to blend it with the surrounding paint. This levels the paint surface and restores gloss.
Deep Scratches to Primer or Metal
The most severe scratches cut all the way through the paint layers down to the primer or bare metal. These can happen from significant scrapes against sharp objects, key vandalism, or minor collisions. You'll typically see a different color (the primer which is often grey or white) or even shiny metal in the scratch.
Repair method: Truly deep scratches require a more involved repair — simply buffing won't suffice. The damaged area may need to be filled, repainted, and clear-coated. At X Detailing, we can handle some deep scratch repairs in-house using body shop techniques on a small scale: applying filler if the gouge is deep, sanding it smooth, then spraying primer, base color, and clear coat in layers to rebuild the finish. We blend the new paint with the old so the repair is as seamless as possible.
For very large or extensive scratches spanning multiple panels, we may recommend our specialized auto body and paint shop for a proper full repair. Most single-panel scratch issues can be fixed in-house by our skilled team.
Scratch Repair Pricing
Pricing is per panel. Most jobs are inspected and quoted in person before any work starts.

Yes — for the vast majority of scratches that don't cut all the way through paint. We work on the clear coat using polishing and wet sanding. Repainting is only needed when the scratch is genuinely deep enough to require new paint, which is less common than people think.
The fingernail test is 80% of the answer: glides over = polishable, catches slightly = polish + touch-up, drops in = body shop. Bring it in for a free inspection and we'll show you exactly what's possible.
For clear-coat scratches: no, completely invisible. For paint-layer scratches: typically 70-95% improvement — the human eye usually can't tell, but at very close inspection in certain lighting, you might see a trace. We always show you the result before you pay.
Single-panel clear-coat scratch: 30-60 minutes. Paint-layer scratch with touch-up: 1-2 hours. Multi-panel work: same day. We'll confirm timing when you book.
Our work is guaranteed — if a scratch we said we'd fix returns or wasn't reduced as quoted, we redo it free. We're transparent about what's possible before work starts to avoid surprises.
Sometimes — depends on your policy and how the scratch happened (key vandalism is often covered, parking lot bumps usually aren't). Our cost is typically less than your deductible anyway, so most clients pay directly. We can provide an invoice for insurance claims.
For very light surface marring (almost invisible) — sometimes. For anything you can actually see clearly, no. Toothpaste is a very mild abrasive that may polish micro-marring but won't touch a real scratch. DIY kits often make things worse by adding swirl marks. Professional polishing uses controlled machine speed, the right pad, and matched compounds.
Three options ranked by protection level: (1) Ceramic coating — multi-year protection, much harder to scratch through, $799-$1,499. (2) Paint Protection Film (PPF) — physical clear film, takes impacts and stone chips. (3) Better wash habits — use two-bucket method and microfiber, avoid automatic car washes.

These guys did a great job and fit me in with my schedule, highly recommend it. Thank you VicPosted on Google Ina OldShoesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I came across X Detailing while searching online for a reliable car detailing service, and after reading so many great reviews, I decided to give them a try—and I’m really glad I did. When I booked an interior detailing, I also asked about some scratches on my door frame and whether fixing them would prevent rust. Viktor, the owner, called me directly to discuss it. He was completely honest and transparent, explaining that while it could likely be improved, he couldn’t guarantee a perfect or permanent fix. That level of honesty really stood out to me—he could have easily tried to upsell me, but instead he chose to set realistic expectations. That alone built a lot of trust before I met him. When I brought my car in, his pricing was very reasonable, and I felt confident leaving my vehicle with him knowing he would treat it like his own. When it came time for pickup, Viktor went above and beyond to accommodate my work schedule, meeting me at 9 PM after I finished at 8:30. That level of customer care is rare. His attention to detail, commitment to his customers, and the relationships he builds through his work truly set him apart—especially in an industry where automotive service is known to upsell. From his workspace to the way he runs and speaks about his business, it’s clear that everything he does is intentional and done with pride. I highly recommend X Detailing and will definitely be bringing my truck in next. I’ll also be referring him to others without hesitation—Calgary is lucky to have him!Posted on Google Megan ButlinTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Don’t plan on getting it done right away, good work takes time. The endless hours spent reviving the paint prior to full PPF install was incredible. Entire process documented for me to follow along. My expectations were high and Viktor and his team exceeded them. Couldn’t recommend this shop more.Posted on Google Kirk DesjardinsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I took my car to X Detailing for a dent on my door, it was a really tough fix and I honestly wasn’t sure it could be done properly. Viktor gave me a phenomenal price right from the start, which was already impressive. When I got the car back, I was blown away. The crew did an amazing job, the door looks fantastic. On top of that, they even did a complimentary spot paint polish to finish everything off, which really shows they care about the final result and customer satisfaction. Great customer service, fair pricing, and excellent workmanship. Highly recommend X Detailing!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
